About Austin CarShare







Austin Carshare is a non-profit organization that is launching the first carsharing program in Texas.

Austin CarShare is a non-profit organization that seeks to educate the public about carsharing and the costs of car ownership while helping to improve our community by reducing traffic, improving air quality, promoting sustainable economic development, increasing the number of transportation options, and improving the quality of life in Austin by providing access to vehicles without the cost of ownership.

Austin CarShare Board of Directors


Sam Archer Sam Archer is a real estate agent with Hindsite 20/20 Real Estate Investments in Austin. Sam is both a graduate of Harvard University and holds a Masters in Public Affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs. Sam was a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala from 1990 to 1993, helping communities in Central America develop technologies to improve their quality of life. Since 1995, Sam has been a public servant with both the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission and then Capital Metro. Sam first got exposed to the work Car Sharing through his work at Capital Metro.


Thomas Butler works at the Downtown Austin Alliance as the director of the Transportation and Streetscapes Program. Previously, he worked as a Community Planner in the National Park Service's Rivers and Trails Conservation Program and spent 5 years with AISD, teaching first and second grade. Current volunteer efforts include working as an ESL tutor.

Thomas received his Bachelors Degree in Journalism from the University of Texas and will complete his Masters Degree from the University's Community and Regional Planning Program in the Spring of 2008.



Brandi ClarkBrandi Clark
(Board Chair) has handled strategic planning and marketing for mission-based businesses and organizations, state agencies and national organizations for over a decade. She has experience launching start-up businesses, including the Likeable Lawyer, Austin Orientation, and EcoNetworking, a project of Environmentality, Inc. Clark is also an accomplished event organizer having produced local, regional and national events. Austin's 2001 Earth Day Festival was awarded local and statewide awards for being a model of sustainability. She has also been the organizing force behind first-time citywide projects such as the 2003 “It's My Park! Day,” which still happens every Earth Day weekend in Austin, and Austin Moving Forward. Brandi is recognized as a leader in promoting healthy & sustainable living, business, and community regularly speaks at events on topics of sustainability.

Brandi grew up in Austin, has a BA in Sociology from Yale University and won the President's Award for Community Service. She is co-chair of the Austin Sustainable Business Council, past chair of the Urban Forestry Board, and founder of the AustinEcoNetwork.



Brian Donovan Brian Donovan
(Board Treasurer) was born in San Francisco and grew up in College Station, Texas. He completed his high school studies in Manchester, England with A levels in Economics, English Literature and Ancient History. Brian returned to College Station and graduated from Texas A&M University with a BA in English 1988. In 1991 he received an MA from UCLA in Folklore and Mythology. Brian worked in grassroots politics for the California League of Conservation Voters while in school at UCLA. He moved to Austin in 1993 and worked at Apple Computer for the next 8 years in sales and sales management in Apple's education division.

In 2000, Brian became involved with starting up local non-profit, Theatre Action Project (TAP). As treasurer in 2001, and chair from 2002-4, Brian helped TAP restructure and expand from one City of Austin grant in 2000 to exceeding a $100,000 budget in 2004. Brian also helped start up Liveable City when he was recruited to be interim Executive Director in 2002. He secured 501c3 status for the group and organized community participation in Envision Central Texas, which created a regional vision for Central Texas.

Brian is currently the General Administrator at the University of Texas Inter-Cooperative Council (ICC), managing 9 student housing cooperatives, 4 staff and a $1.1 million dollar budget. ICC is a 501c3 non-profit with a board consisting of member-residents elected by the houses and provides affordable housing to students in Austin, Texas.


David Foster David Foster (Board Secretary) was born in Dallas and came to Austin in 1983 to study at UT, receiving an MA in Modern European History in 1989. He returned to Austin in 1993 after a three-year stay in Germany, where he experienced first-hand the joys and possibilities of living car-free in compact, livable cities. He went to work for Clean Water Action in 1995, becoming its State Program Director in 2003, where he oversees its programmatic work and helps plan and implement budgets for many projects. He served as part-time Executive Director of Trans Texas Alliance, a statewide transportation reform group, from 2001-2003, where he successfully oversaw the implementation of a TxDOT traffic safety grant with an annual budget of over $100,00. Foster serves on the board of many non-profits, including Envision Central Texas and Liveable City, and has taught university-level classes in history and government. He and his wife Virginia have two grown children and two grandchildren.


Ann FlemmingAnna Livingston is a lay professional in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) currently working at the seminary program here in Austin. She grew up in rural western New York, but has spent most of her adult life in Texas.

Anna holds a degree in legal assisting from the Community College of the Air Force, a Bachelor’s degree from Texas State University with a focus in Business Management and a Masters in Nonprofit Administration from the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest. She has worked as the business manager of some large Lutheran congregations as well as at the corporate headquarters of a mid-sized food processing company. She assisted in establishing the first U.S. subsidiary of a high-tech machine tool industry company out of Switzerland.

Volunteer interests have led Anna to work with various organizations which focus on either children and education or environmental concerns.


Marc Miller has been a programmer, engineer, consultant, marketer, manager and trainer in the Austin high tech industry for 28 years. He has worked for IBM, Agere Inc. , Lucent Technologies, Agere Systems and later spent a couple of years working for AISD as a High School Math teacher. Throughout his career he has traveled the world delivering technical presentations and technical training in over 25 different countries. The last year was spent raising corporate monies for the Jewish Community Association of Austin.

Marc has a BS in Computer Science from Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering. He is an active bicyclist and is a League Certified Bicycling Instructor (LCI) for the League of American Bicyclists. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Austin Cycling Association and Launch Pad Job Club.


Roshan Nair, active in the local small-business community, brings with him experience from startups he has helped nurture. He was most recently involved with Blue Sky Scrubs, a luxury medicalwear manufacturer. He is currently working on taking local organic household products national with EcoSparkle.com. Before startups, Roshan worked with Fortune 500 companies as an external auditor with KPMG LLP, a 'Big 4' accounting firm.

Originally from India, Roshan grew up in Dubai, UAE, where he was active in grassroots water conservation and waste reduction initiatives. Since coming to Austin to earn his Bachelors and Masters in Accounting from UT, he has become more passionate about environmental conservation efforts. When he's not staring at spreadsheets, you can find Roshan rowing or biking at Town Lake .


Chris RileyChris Riley (Board Vice Chair) was born and raised in Austin. He graduated with honors from Harvard College in 1986, and received his law degree from the University of Texas in 1989. He then worked at the Supreme Court of Texas for five years before joining Shields & Rusk, P.C., which is now known as The Rusk Law Firm.

Since 1990, Chris has lived in Downtown Austin. He co-founded the Downtown Austin Neighborhood Association in 1997, and served as its president until September 2001, when he was appointed to the City of Austin Planning Commission. He became vice-chair of the Planning Commission in 2002, and served as its chair from April 2004 to July 2006. He has also served on the City of Austin's Downtown Commission since 1999, and was chair of that board during 2002 and 2003.

Chris is currently the chair of the Austin History Center Association, and represents that association on the board of the Heritage Society of Austin. He also serves on the board of the Austin Parks Foundation..

Advisor to the Board

Tanya Seaman serves as Executive Director PhillyCarShare, a nonprofit car-sharing organization in Philadelphia. Beginning in 2002 with no staff and only modest working capital, she organized volunteers and board members to wash cars, perform outreach, and manage finances, while donating months of her own time to launch the organization. As thousands of businesses and residents have joined, Ms. Seaman has employed technology advances to automate internal systems, thus improving customer service, membership growth, and productivity. Each PhillyCarShare vehicle has replaced 23 private cars, which saves members millions of dollars annually while driving hybrid vehicles millions of miles fewer than before they joined PhillyCarShare. Ms. Seaman builds on her background as a designer to develop technology enhancements and marketing materials; and her education and passion in urban planning to promote car sharing in all aspects of living and working in Philadelphia. Ms. Seaman holds a Masters in City and Regional Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelors degree in Environmental Design from the Universityof California at Davis. In recognition of her assertive leadership, technological prowess, and unequivocal commitment to PhillyCarShare, the Philadelphia Business Journal has recognized Ms. Seaman as one of Philadelphia’s outstanding "40 Under 40".

Austin CarShare
